The most important thing I learned about craft this year is that a writer must be aware of ALL promises made to the reader.
This can be foreshadowing, or just detail about an object. Say, an author describes an old ceramic mug on the kitchen counter that Josey's great-aunt painted by hand. The reader follows the sunlight as it eases across the half-inch long chip down alongside the handle... wouldn't you expect that mug to reappear later? Maybe Josey will make tea one night when she can't sleep, and she is scalded when the handle breaks off. Or, perhaps her great-aunt was a closet mug painter and her legacy is worth thousands?
I'm sure there's a way to tie this into a murder mystery somehow... :)
Hmm, most important thing about craft... Probably that if you try to be perfect and follow every single little rule out there--you'll suck the life right out of your story.
And although the time has passed for this question, I'll still answer. I learned from reading Angi's posts the best lesson of all--never give up because everything you've been working for could be just around the corner!
Congrats on your release, Angi!
Why thank you, Roni!
So the most important thing I've learned about writing and myself this year? I can actually write a good book --fast-- and my critique partners are AWESOME !

The most important thing I've learned about craft is that it's different for everyone. No two writers approach it the same. What works great for one can cause another to hit a brick wall. Just my thoughts.
Most important thing I've learned is that I can't anticipate what an editor wants, I just have to write what makes me happy.
Hi Angi, I've really enjoyed following your journey here through the various blog posts. It's given me a little idea what awaits me over the next year! All the best with your release. The book is awesome!!!

THANK YOU, Cat.
And next week-- pick up the phone and give me a shout, I'll tell you the down-low on what you need to do to prepare for this whirlwind ride.

Completely off topic, but can I just yell:
Yea! Your release date has arrived!
Frankly, this is where the rubber hits the road and as a devoted GH sister and fan, I'm off to Amazon to purchase my copy of Hill Country Holdup.
Hi Angi! The most important thing I have learned about the craft is write, edit and wait!
